The protection class IP56 for Outdoor Equipment

IP 56 is the rating for housing, subject to a variety of weather conditions. This is a standard by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and is a global standard. In the U.S., the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has similar standards.

Diecast aluminum enclosure, type AN-1302 Overview

Aluminum alloy #ADC-10 enclosure is designed to IP65 of IEC 529 and NEMA 4 specifications, and is UL508-4 certified. House sensitive electronic assemblies, pneumatic, hydraulic or electrical devices in wet and dirty commercial and industrial environments. Enclosures have internal bosses for mounting PCBs or connecting terminals, grounds, or other electrical and control devices. Cover incorporates provisions for recessed gasket. Gasket is EPDM. In order to maintain NEMA 4X rating, cable glands must be used when cables enter or exit the enclosure.

The first digit indicates the protection against access to hazardous parts and any foreign objects get into the encolosure. In other words, how hard is it to keep your finger there and cause problems.

The second number indicates the amount of protection against water.

Here are the names of the first digit - Hazardous ingredients:

0 - Not protected
protected from access to the back - 1hand (50mm size object)
2 - Protected against access with finger-jointed (12 mm x 80 mm)
3 - to acess with a tool (2.5 mm);
4, 5, 6 - Protected against access with a wire (1.0 mm)

Here are the names for the first figure - solid foreign body:

0 - Not protected
1 - objects larger than 50mm
2 - objects larger than 12.5 mm
3 - objects larger than 2.5
4 - objects larger than or equal to 1 mm
5 - Dustprotected
6 - Dustproof

Protective designation for the second digit - penetration of liquids

0 - Not protected
1 - Water dripping vertically
2 - Water drips, investment tilted up to 15 d
3 - splash, UPT to 60d angle from the vertical
4 - spray, any direction
5 - water jets, each direction
6 - water jets of water, any direction
7 - temporary immersion in water
8 - Continuous immersion in water

You canTo see that an IP56-rated housing is protected against dust (and other small particles) and is waterproof against water jets from all directions.
